Florida Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink said Thursday that the My Safe Florida Home program will meet its goal of approving 400,000 homeowners for free wind inspections a year ahead of schedule and stop taking new applications in the next few days. Homeowners who participated in the program received a report suggesting ways they could harden their homes against storms and informing them whether they were eligible for lower insurance premiums. Some 39,000 also were approved to receive mitigation grants to help them harden their homes; the program has paid 18,787 grants totaling $63.8 million.

Video may aid in pharmacy robberies	7/3/2008 10:00 PM
The Orange County Sheriff's Office on Thursday released a video of a person detectives say may have information about a rash of pharmacy robberies. The video shows a teen enter the CVS pharmacy near South John Young Parkway and Americana Boulevard about 3:30 a.m. June 15, walk down a few aisles and leave, Detective Jose Ramirez said. He then removes his shirt to show his all black clothing underneath. Two masked men dressed in black later enter and pistol-whip an employee and rob the store. Deputies think the first man may help lead them to the suspects. Six Walgreens and CVS stores in Orange and Seminole have been robbed since May. Sketch shows man police seek	7/3/2008 10:00 PM
Orange County sheriff's officials re-released a sketch Thursday of a "person of interest" in the slaying of jogger Nicole Ganguzza. Investigators are asking people to keep the image of the man in mind and report suspicious behavior during the holiday weekend, said criminal investigations Chief Ron Stucker. Ganguzza, 26, was abducted and killed June 10 when she was jogging along the Little Econ Greenway, a popular exercise trail that runs through Jay Blanchard Park. Stucker said detectives have collected DNA samples.

An Orlando-area man was shot dead Wednesday night in Eatonville, police said Thursday. The 19-year-old, whose name was not released, was walking to his car after visiting relatives when he was shot, an investigator said. The man was on Calhoun Avenue, north of Kennedy Boulevard, when someone drove by in a dark-green sedan and shot him once in the chest about 8:45 p.m., police said. He died at Florida Hospital Orlando.
Orlando Ballet director leaves for Washington job	7/3/2008 10:00 PM
Russell Allen, executive director of the Orlando Ballet for the past four years, will exit Orlando at the end of the summer to take the same job at the Washington (D.C.) Ballet -- in part because he wants to be closer to his father, who has had recent health problems. "It's an opportunity to work for a top company right there where my father lives," Allen said. The Washington Ballet has an approximately $9 million budget, compared to Orlando Ballet's nearly $5 million. The Orlando company ended its season in the red, by about $200,000, for the first time in a decade.
